Cannot install hardware - Wizard message for printer that has been

I have recently added a HP Photosmart 3210 to my setup. Intsallation appeared
to go OK and the printer works fine BUT......

When I start the PC new hardware is detected - the Printer (and a USB Mass
Storage device AND a disc drive). The new hardware wizard starts but
I get the message -

Cannot install this hardware - Problem installing
HP3210USB -

The specified service does not exist as an installed
service.

I have tried HPCS and they gave up (said it was a XP fault).

The advise from HP included deleting LPTENUM from the registry but I get a
message - unable to delete LPTENUM.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Power-off your HP printer, then physically disconnect it
from your PC. Then uninstall your HP printer software,
reboot your PC, install the latest HP printer software,
then reconnect your printer when prompted to do so
during the HP printer software installation.

Software Installation instructions:

1. Click the Download now button to begin the download.
2. Choose Open to start the download and run the software installer.
3. If you are connecting the HP All-in-One device over a network, please refer to the Setup Poster which shipped with your HP
All-in-One for network setup and software installation instructions.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the installation process.
5. USB ONLY: Connect the USB cable between your HP All-in-One device and your PC when directed by on-screen instructions, then
turn on your HP All-in-One device.
6. Wait for additional on-screen installation instructions before using your HP All-in-One device.

Advice from HP ? You didn't talk to HP (That company is gone).
You spoke to a sub-contracted, Off-shored support center where
all the person did was search a database for any matching case info.
3 suggestions made always indicates what you're dealing with.
1:) Uninstall
2:) Reinstall
3:) Not our fault, contact "Company Name"

From your description, I sounds like one or several of the system
services that support USB hardware isn't running. Check your System
Event Log for Red Icons that denote errors. Basically, If your
System log has any error(s) then expect problems with your PC.

I would uninstall all drivers/support software for the unit. Download
the latest package from the web. Unplug the unit. You might need
to uninstall any "Phantom" devices from Device Manager (w/ VIEW
Option "Show Hidden Devices" tic'd/checked.
Phantoms appear in diminished tone (Grayed Out)
Disk Drives
Storage Volumes
Printers

One of the problems with these Printer/Card Reader units is all the
"Junk" support software that HP tries to hoist on the users PC. It is
actually better to just install drivers and try to avoid all the other
stuff.
