New Hardware Wizzard

Hi there,
A while back, I updated my spouse's printer drive (HP Deskjet 5550) and ever
since then, the New Hardware Wizard bubble starts up (three times) every time
the PC is turned on and it wants to go through the motions. I did find a
solution at MS Support (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298370) but when I
followed the instructions, it wouldn't let me delete the key. The message was
"Cannot delete LPTENUM: Error while deleting key." Also, the PC has two
entries under it: hpdeskjet_5550 and MicrosoftRawPort (my PC has the one
folder LPTENUM) so if I get to the point of deleting the LPTENUM, do I delete
the two subfolders as well?
Thanks very much for any help!
Paul.

The Plug and Play process creates the registry enum keys such that
Administrators do not have delete rights on the key. Admins, however, can
change the key permissions. Just right click on the key and Set permissions
such that administrators have Full Control. Then you can delete the key. I
am sure there is a reason why this group did this.

Thanks very much for the response! I've just followed your instructions and
changed the permission to Yes and I was then able to delete the LPTENUM key
and its two sub-directories. After I restarted the PC, all the same stuff was
happening. I went back into the Registry and LTPENUM folder was back (along
with the two sub-folders). Then I right-clicked and went to Permissions and
then to Advanced and checked of Allow Delete. I deleted the LPTENUM again,
restarted the PC and I was still getting the New Hardware Found bubbles. The
checks seem to be going in the boxes OK but I don't think they're actually
staying there after I do all the OKs and Apply.
