cannot install fax component in XP Pro

Hi Russ,

Please have a look at my faxsetup.log file. What can here be the issue?
Everything seems to go smoothly until the end and suddenly the install fails.
My modem is on the HCL list (it actually has worked before using Fax XP, but
it suddenly failed. No clue of what went wrong).
I also tried to run: esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb and
rebooted. No success (the setuplog is actually taken from that action). I
will copy this message to the message board too (community news group under
the Windows XP Printing and Fax section).

Fax seems to install fine, but when my machine is about to start the fax
service, it fails and rolls back the installation. All dependant services
(like telephony, etc) seems to have started. I can succesfully query my
faxmodem via device manager, etc.

Any idea?

What do you mean by the "install fails?" List the steps you used and the
results.
"esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb" is not in play if your
installation failed.

This may be a long shot-- Try installing an external "standard 56k modem"
first.
This was the only way I was able to then successfully install a Brother all
in one.
The brother would install, the brother software would work, but not windows
fax before I tried the standard modem install..
After installing the standard 56k, and windows fax, the succeeding install
of the proper modem (with an up to date inf file )
and usually to the same com port) will eventually require that you pick
which one to use by deactivating the other.
Just for giggles, I also tried a real external modem. In the process of
testing it, and locating a current inf file, I found a v.92 firmware update
for it, so it was sort of worth the trouble, even though it's seldom used.

I uninstalled the modem drivers through device manager, physically removed my
modem PCI card, started the machine, entered : "esentutl /p
%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb" (don't know wheather this was
necessary, but this is what I did), shut down, reinstalled the PCI card,
powered up the PC, Windows found the new hardware, reinstalled the driver and
then I installed the fax component through add/ remove programs and
add/remove windows components. Now Windows XP fax is up and running.
It seems that the fax component only installs correctly, when Windows
recognizes the correct modem. Although my modem is in the HCL list, Windows
failed to recognize my modem correctly. Reinstalling the driver seem to have
solved the problem.
