Problems Installing Fax + Other Windows Components

?

-

I was having some problems with faxes not terminating correctly, so I
thought I would uninstall fax software and then reinstall it to see if that
would solve the problem.

When trying to reinstall the fax software, I got the common problem where
the installation routine kept asking to open the file even though the file
could be seen right there on the Windows XP SP2 install disk.

I searched the archives of this group and found I should first read this
bulletin: "You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884018

Which lead me to this procedure: "ESENT event IDs 1000, 1202, 412, and 454
are logged repeatedly in the Application log"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278316/

I completed the manual procedure listed in the document above.

That didn't work, so I tried this procedure found in multiple messages in
this forum:

1. Click on the Windows Start Menu.
2. Click Run.
3. Type esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb in the Open
box, and click OK.
4. Install IIS through the Control Panel Add/Remove Windows Components
applet.

I can now click my fax icon and the fax console will open up but it does not
work. I get and error icon at the bottom of the fax console that states "no
fax printer installed" and an error that states "The RPC server is
unavailable.(1722, 0400000284)"

That lead me to believe I needed to install the IIS (internet information
services) from within Add Remove Programs > Add Remove Windows Components.
Unfortunately, I now have the same problem trying to install IIS where it
keeps asking for a file on the install disk even though you can browse and
see the file is right there in the folder.

Also, I am unable to uninstall fax services now from within Add Remove
Programs > Add Remove Windows Components.

I have run the esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb routine
multiple times, even after rebooting into safe mode.

To me, this seems more about some sort of Windows security or permissions
problem since I can not install or remove any windows components but I am
just totally lost as to where to start troubleshooting things.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Russ -

Sorry if I wasn't clear. You are probably right that uninstalling my fax
software was not the right method was not the right procedure to go about
fixing things. With that said, it did uncover my computer's inability to
correctly install or unistall any windows components. Correcting my
system's inability to install or uninstall any windows components is my main
concern at this point.

Yes, thanks. From that page: >>These are compressed DLL files and will need
to be decompressed....The install routine still may not find these files. If
so, then you must manually direct the installation routine to the i386
folder that contains these extracted files.<<

It can find the files. It just can't open them. I have even uncompressed
the files but the installer doesn't want to use the uncompressed file and
continues to request the compressed dl_ file. Also, most of the requested
files are already on my harddrive in uncompressed form in the dll directory
within /windows.

The next thing that page suggested was: >>In rare cases, a security
database can become corrupted, preventing the installation of XP Fax and a
number of other components. This article has detailed information on the
problem and a method to correct it:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884018 - You cannot add a Windows component
in Windows XP<<

As I said before, I tried the procedures suggested there. Both the manul
method and the "esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb" method.
I have not tried the hotfix but I have seen posts here (possibly including
one from you) saying the hotfix may not be the best approach. Additionally,
when I tried to email microsoft support to ask for the hotfix it said I was
my OEM Windows Pro was not qualified to ask for support help, so I guess I
can't get it.

Unfortunately, I still am unable to install or uninstall any windows
components. The installer keeps asking for the file location even though it
shows them in the browse dropdown window that pops up during installation.

Suggestions, please?

Thanks,

Doug

The only relevant portion is "you must manually direct the installation

You'll have to contact your OEM. They're the only ones who can tell you.
This is not a fax issue.

In case anyone else has this problem and finds this thread via Google, here
is what Microsoft directed me to do over a number of days and emails. Each
step starting with a letter is the action they asked me to take when the
previous action failed to cure the issue.

A. Install the "cannot install windows components" hotfix KB884018 (you have
to get Microsoft support to email you the download location and password -
they refunded my support charge of $35).

B. Reinstall the fax program files (they sent them to me)

C. Based on the current information, this issue can occur if the security
database is corrupted. At this point let's perform the following steps to
troubleshoot this issue:
1. Click Start, click Run.

2. Type the following command and then press ENTER.

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that
something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. See if
problem persists.

D. At this point, please follow the steps below to perform a System File
Check:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM.

2. Click Exit if the auto-menu pops up.

3. Click Start, and click Run.

4. Type "SFC /purgecache" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and
click OK.

Note: there is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/purgecache".

5. Type "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and
click OK.

Note: there is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow".

Restart the computer and check whether the original issue is resolved.

E. Perform a repair install from the original XP SP2.

After "E", I can now install and uninstall windows components (knock on
wood). You have to redo all of your Windows Updates. It has only been two
hours, so I don't know what other issues might be lurking...
