Re: Cannot install Epson Stylus C62 USB Printer

OS: Windows 2000 SP4

PC: AMD Athlon XP 1700+

Current default printer: Brother HL-1440 Laser on parallel port - is fully
operational

History:

The driver software & printer functioned A-OK on this same PC when it ran
Windows XP several months ago - along with the default laser printer. I
uninstalled Windows XP, reformatted boot drive, did a clean install to W2K,
& updated without issues to SP4. I did not attempt to install the Epson
Stylus until just recently when I ran into the current installation
problems.

Epson Stylus printer Installation Problems:

Epson user manual W2K installation protocol sequence requires: (1) The
printer USB cable to be connected to the PC (2) Printer power switch turned
on to activate printer (3) Turn on & boot PC (3) Await Windows 'Found New
Hardware Wizard' to popup (4) Load Epson installation CD (5) Click 'Next' on
Wizard (6) Click 'Search for a suitable driver' on the succeeding wizard
popup: 'Install Hardware Device Drivers' (7) Click 'CD-ROM drives' & then
'Next' on the succeeding wizard window: 'Locate Driver Files' (8) and click
'Finish' on the next wizard popup window that announces: Windows has
finished installing the software for this device (Epson Stylus C62 Series).

Executing the above procedure, at (7) one popup message says "Found new
Hardware.. copying files" & then almost immediately follows a New Hardware
Wizard error message: "An error occurred during the installation of the
device. Access is denied."

If alternate attempts to install the driver is made (for example, using the
'Add Printer' by opening the 'Printers' folder in Control Panel, I get two
contradictory system messages:

One says I have successfully added a new printer. The other message says:"
Driver cannot be installed. Your Windows system may be in an abnormal
condition."

Contact with Epson Support:

Epson tech reps advised & suggested: (1) My W2K system is probably corrupted
(2) Try installing on a second W2K PC. A reasonable suggestion! I do have
an older PC running W2K SP4. It is a Dell Dimension XPS T450 MHz (Pentium
III).

The printer & driver installed without incident on my old W2K PC following
the Epson user manual procedure described above.

CONCLUSION: The W2K OS on my Athlon PC is indeed in an 'abnormal condition.
'

NOTE: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 246354 reports that if there is
already an entry for the particular USB printer in the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBPRINT

Then the user will experience installation errors unless the entry is
deleted from the register before attempting to install the printer software.
Well, the Stylus C62 was entered in that key! However, the deletion of that
key from the W2K register did not resolve the issue. The OS recognized new
hardware upon rebooting (it would not have done so unless the register key
had been deleted) BUT the same error conditions were simply repeated as
described above.

If anyone who had the patience to review this has a fix or a suggestion,
please advise.
