| Thanks, David. I agree, a card reader is a must.
| Here is the basic dilemma:
| The disk has not only drivers, but image-handling software as well. Olympus,
| both on their website and via correspondence, has been nothing but a
| runaround. If I download photos to my computer via a card reader, will they
| automatically end up in the My Pictures folder? If they do, then I need some
| software to manipulate the photos with, and the disk has that software. So,
| while I appreciate your very sound advice regarding a card reader, do you
| have any insight as to why I am getting a Windows 16-Bit Subsystem error
| message on a program copyrighted 1999? And what can I do about it?

Hi TW:
I don't know what could be causing the problems with the 16bit sub-system. You could ty
restoring the files needed...
AUTOEXEC.NT & CONFIG.NT Fix Method 1:
copy; c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt
to
c:\windows\system32
copy; c:\windows\repair\config.nt
to
c:\windows\system32
AUTOEXEC.NT & CONFIG.NT FIX Method 2:
Go to; Start --> Run
enter; cmd.exe
{ assuming the WinXP CDROM disk is in drive "D:" }
In the Command Prompt enter...
expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ %windir%\system32\autoexec.nt
expand D:\i386\config.nt_ %windir%\system32\config.nt
Maybe TEMP path is too long or is having problems with Long File names even though it is
converted to 8.3.
That would mean changing the NT Environmental variable TEMP from
C:\DOCUME~1\USERNAME\LOCALS~1\Temp\
[ C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\ ]
to
c:\windows\temp
This way there is a simple 8.3 folder path to the TEMP directory.
Right Click on "My Computer" --> Advanced --> Environment Variables --> User Variables -->
Temp
change to ...
c:\windows\temp
As for the question of being automatically placed in "My Pictures". No.
Lets assume that when you connect the USB Memory Card Reader it creates a "G:" drive. You
woul have to copy or move the files from "G:" to "My Pictures". It is always *best* to copy
and then when happy you can delete them from "G:" drive in case you muck up a JPEG.
As for software, I use Paint Shop Pro, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe PhoShop Elements 2.0. They
cost money albeit Paint Shop Pro is inexpensive.
However, IrFanView is free and is pretty good.
