Windows Updates Fail to Install

For the past two months I've been unable to get Windows/Microsoft Update
site to install the dozen or so updates that I want to install. When I run
the site, it goes through and downloads all the updates, but after 2-3
minutes of trying to install, it returns back the message that all of the
updates could not be installed.

Well after that happened I decided to check out the systemroom\KBxxxxx logs
to see what they were showing. Here is a sample part of one log that comes
from the update of KB917422 which is one of the updates that won't install.
Does anyone have any solution around this problem. I REALLY don't want to
format.

Yes, I am also having problems installing critical updates on my xp sp2
system. I've noticed though, that when windows update checks to see if there
are newer updates for my pc, It takes about seven minutes and finally
presents a list of new updates. It used to take thirty seconds for all new
updates to be present. As mentioned by Brad, it will download with no
problems, but failure to install the updates message will appear. I've went
as far as renaming tha catroot2 folder, deleting temp/cookies files and
deleting the contents of the softwaredistribution folder to no avail. The
system services that should be running [BITS, Automatic updates and Event
log] are all in a started state. I'm not sure if this has any impact, but I
elected to not install the genuine advantage update this time around.

FWIW

Do you have firewall e.g. Zonealarm?
Disable it before you update.
Look at the log file and you will see some actions are marked to
block.

Worked for me. Since I wanted the programs to run I marked
them as 'Allowed'.

This setup had worked for a year just fine with McAfee enabled. Even with
it disabled, it still no longer installs the updates.

Did you ever have it installed? In any event, disable McAfee's auto scan
before installing.
