Patches not being deployed by WU seems blocking my PC to get to SP

My PC seems to have troubles with WU, a number of patches are repeatedly
tried to be deployed without success hence they are repated next day.
My objective is to upgrade my PC from WIN XP2002 Home Ed. from SP1 to SP2.
But these repeatedly failing patches, seems to block my way.
One of these failing patches, are one for MDAC2.8.
I am soon going crazy since I cannot figure out whats wrong, anybody seen
this before or can suggest a workaround (without re-install Image) please ?

As an example I copy parts (last day) of the log from KB914798 patch:

PRosenberg,
There are a lots of references to symantec in the log; have you tried
temporarily exiting any symantec programs that are running in the
background? Maybe they are causing problems...

No I haven't. Primarily for two reasons:
1. The security shouldn't be disabled, unless I take if from the network
(make's my Web server unreachable for users)
2. The information you refer to, is termed as OLD and NEW information to be
recorded in registry, so its not pertaining to any processes as such.
But it might be, that permissions in the registry are somehow changes so for
example SYSTEM account cannot modify it or so. That I will check.
I think one should concentrate on the error codes (a few) given:

Unfortunately, I have not knowledge in XP Internals to tell which ones are
the result of the root cause, and what I can do about it.

Trying just to forget about those repeatingly failing patches, and trying
install SP2 which is downloaded, the %WINDIR%\SVCPACK.LOG and
%WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.LOG says respectively :
The SP2 update ended in error, with a prompt that I cannot translate to
english:
