Cannot get page number to appear on slides

I cannot get page number to appear on slides when I go to header/footer and
master slide is checked for all choices

Some thoughts:
- is there a check next to slide number in the Header and footer dialogue?
If there is try removing it and reapplying it immediately after.
- do you have multiple slide masters, maybe you applied one where there is
no slide number?
- something is covering the slide number on the slide?
- slide number placeholder formatted in the background color?
