cannot format disc for ms dos start up

When I install a blanck CD-R and click on Format Disc, it brings up a window,
but the selection I want, Create and MS-Dos start up disc, is shaded and I
cannot choose it. HOw do I do this? My anti-virus program is telling me to
make a bootable disc to make a Rescue Disc and cannot get past the format
disk part. Please help

Also, I want to format a disc and having multiple problems. I have CD - R
disc. I put it in the computer, I went to My Computer, I clicked on Local
Disc (c) and then went to File and clicked format. It brought up a window, I
checked off Quick Format and then it told me Windows was unable to format.
Im not sure, what I am doing wrong. I don't know anything about this stuff.

You cannot format a CD-R but you can format a floppy diskette.

You don't format a CD, you write (burn) to it. You need CD capable of writing, and burning
software that's capable of making a bootable CD (start-up disc, as you put it...)

Lucky for you that Windows gave you that message. You attempted to format your Hard Disk, not a
CD!

Use http:www.google.com and learn how to use your CD before you get into trouble. :)

ok, i clicked that link, but it tells me to use a CD-R, which is what I used,
so I am confused as to what kind of disc to use - I understand what I did
wrong w/ choosing the c: drive, So I put my CD-R in the computer again and
went to My Computer and seclected CD drive D: but when I pulled down the
File menu, I couldn't find a Format button, I couldn't find one anywhere.

Read my reply again. You don't format a CD-R, you write to it.
Here, I googled for you: http://tinyurl.com/ggw7n

You don't format CD-R disks, only rewritable disks such as CD-RW or RAM
disks. See this link for info:

You're probably wasting your time with this task.

The MS-DOS rescue disk is basically only intended for use with Windows 9x/Me or
if your hard drive was FAT32 formatted.

To verify the format of your drive, click on My Computer then r-click on the C
drive and select Properties. The format is shown on the General tab.

If it's NTFS, you're out-of-luck.

As many have already said you need special software to make a startup
(bootable) CD-R. Which antivirus program is telling you to make a rescue
disk? Does your computer have a floppy drive?
