CDRW & Error Message

Windows XP & KIS2010

Before installing Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (updating from KIS2009) I
copied some files and information to disc using drive F and a cdrw disc and
everything worked correctly (done 30 July 2008)

Today (31 July 2008) I wanted to copy some more files to disc and did the
following:-

Inserted the cdrw disc - no noise from drive when reading the disc and the
folder did not automatically open.

Went to My Computer, F Drive, Clicked and it brought up the folder with the
file which I could look at.

I went to the files I wanted to copy to this disc (the option usually
appears is copy this information to disc and also erase this disc which I
sometimes use when wanted to clear the disc before copying new information
wanted over) and clicked Copy picture/file and write to cdrw.

Error Message:-

CD Writing Wizard
There is no disc in the drive. Please insert writable cd into drive F:/.

I also as a test tried a cd that should auto run (craft type cd) and the
same problem, it didn't come up but could view by finding the folder on the F
drive, and could see and open the pdf files.

I don't know if it is coincidence as I haven't tried copying anything since
the upgrade to KIS2010 or if something has happened since any xp updates but
wondered if you could advise.

I did read and search for similar problems on this board before posting this
and read that I should check Devise Manager.

I checked to see what was under the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES and it came up with:-

TSSTCORP CD/DVDW SH-S182D.

I am not brilliant on the computer but can follow instructions.

Many thanks for replying.

I have followed the instructions on the page you gave and although the
recording tab was already present (before) I did have to change the "drive
type value of the volume folder" which was set on number 1 but I changed it
to number 2 for cdrw.

I tried to copy some information to disc and the same error as before.

Hopefully you will know what to try next.

Just to add:-

I looked more at the Device Manager and found a "trouble shooting" section
and found this information:

I clicked through all the trouble shooting (without touching anything) and
it mentioned about uninstalling and then windows xp should recognise this and
reinstall.

I haven't done this as I don't really understand it all but I thought I
should post what I've found incase it helps you advise me of the next step.

I've also emailed KIS but when disabling KIS2010 the problem is still there
so I don't think it is to do with updating just a coincidence.

Hello Peter

I followed the instructions on your link and took the Fix It For Me option
and restarted the computer.

I put in a disc, again no noise as it was reading the disc, the folder/file
didn't open up automatically. Found F Drive and d/clicked and the folder
there but again it wouldn't allow me to copy a jpeg over (was just testing).

I also tried a dvd (film) and again the same as the above, only when
clicking on the folder in F Drive you could see all the folders but no way to
allow it to play.

I'm concerned that the drive isn't making the usual noise when inserting a
disc, before the popping up of the option "open the folder with this/that"
etc but I'm still hoping its a software problem as money is tight.

I've ordered a usb stick so that hopefully I'll still be able to save over
important data but the dvd rom drive needs to work as if I add any software,
have problems with xp and need to use the discs at the moment I can't.

I appreciate your help very much as I'm at a total loss to understand what's
happened and why.

I have read a lot today but as I'm not computer literate (can operate and
follow instructions) I wouldn't dare touch anything I'm not sure of.

I have to sign off for a couple of hours so please don't think I'm rude if I
don't reply but after reading so much today my brain is a little addled plus
my familing need feeling

If I don't get back this evening to check any replies/further instructions I
will check in the morning and post back what I've done etc.

help I'll be able to sort out the problems and if anyone else has them then
hopefully this post will help them too.

UPDATE:-

Have just taken this to a computer shop and they put in:-

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7200A

but this hasn't fixed any of the problems above.

I am taking back the tower tomorrow for them to run proper checks as they
think it is a software problem and will update in case this is use to anyone.
Hopefully they will be able to put the old drive back as it looks like
putting a new one in didn't fix the problem.

Update:-

CPU just back from the computer shop and they have fixed the problem (or
part of it) and discs can now be burned, played but the autoplay option does
not come up.

I did ask if I needed to reinstall windows xp whether I'd be able to do this
without the autoplay working and was told I should be able to.

Will search the database to see if there is a known problem with autoplay.
