Cannot find DC

Very small organisation running only one Win2K server.

Machine hung after update to SP4 but was able to remove and continue.

Removed / disabled all programs. Tried again. Unable to boot in Safe Mode.
ERD failed. Reinstalled Win2K SP2 from original CD.

Machine looks remarkably good, considering. AD data is there and DNS works
but other machines cannot connect to shares, cannot find domain. Many RAS
errors.

NetDiag and DcDiag show errors like:
- Cannot find DC in domain 'HOME'. [ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN]
- A Global Catalog Server could not be located

DcPromo offers to demote DC discard AD data but has no repair features.

Question: is there a manual way to set Global Catalog etc?

Alternative is to restore system state from before reinstall. Concerned
that this will make matters worse.

Thanks

If you only had a single DC and you re-installed then ALL your old object
identifiers (SIDS, GUIDS) are gone. You could go back and rename everything
the same but those are human type names. The internal workings generates
numbers that machines use that wouldn't match up with the old names. If you
have a backup with system state you could look at doing an authoritative
restore but otherwise you have to start over from scratch.

First recommendation - If you have AD use at least 2 dc's.

Thank you. What I feared.

How come I am still looking at the data? Users, computers etc are still
there. Internally, the machine thinks it is a DC. Is there any way to
construct a new domain from the ruins of the old one?
