cannot find autochk, skipping autocheck

We recently bought a new hard drive (80 GB) and used
DriveWorks to copy our old hard drive (6.4 GB). Windows
XP Home is the operating system. We want to use the new
hard drive and remove the old one. When we do this and
try to boot from the new hard drive, the system shows the
Windows XP Home screen for several seconds and then
displays a blue screen with the following words appearing
along the top:

Cannot find autochk skipping autocheck

The system then reboots back as if you had pressed the
power switch and it goes back through BIOS tests, etc.
This cycle continues on and on.

We have tried to boot into Safe Mode, Debugging Mode,
etc. with no success as the system always reboots soon
after selecting an alternative boot.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I have
searched the Microsoft database and cannot find a
suitable solution.

Thanks

can you get to safemode command prompt? (f8 during the startup)
If you can, try running chkdsk c: /r
Otherwise, if you have the XP cd you can bot from it directly
and run the recovery console to do chkdsk.

Dave,

Yes, we could get into the startup screen with F8. Could
not get into Safe Mode (same pattern and error message
appeared as with a normal boot). Did boot from the
Windows XP CD and went into the recovery console. We did
run CHKDSK and reran with the /p switch. CHKDSK found
nothing wrong and could not fix or correct anything since
it did not find anything wrong.

I thought about using the command FIXBOOT but decided to
find out further information at this time. Any other
ideas would be appreciated.

autochk.exe exists in \windows\system32 and there may be a backup
copy in \windows\system32\dllcache.
The version I have is SP1, 5.1.2600.1106,
565,760 bytes.

If you don't have SP1, your version may be different.

If you have a version in DLLCACHE, use the recovery console to
copy it from there to the one in SYSTEM32.
