autochk not found skipping AUTOCHECK

Good day all,

I'm having a bad day!
My laptop broke but luckily I was able to remove
the hard drive (2.5 inch) and access the data.

Now, I attached the laptop hard drive to my office
PC via a USB cable. I was able to access the data.
Because of a Windows update I restarted the PC
while my laptop hard drive was still attached.

I believe that because of that attachment the
PC tried to boot from my laptop hard drive.
Then I disconnected the hard drive and try to
restart my PC again.

But then the following message occured
"autochk not found skipping AUTOCHECK"

and thereafter another screen saying something
about a "fatal error". Then nothing won't happen.

By the way, I'm using Windows XP on my PC,
also Windows XP was the operating system on
my broken laptop.

I tried to run my PC in safe mode but I'm ending
with the same error message.

Looking at
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=831426
doesn't help me.

Any suggestions would very much appreciated!
Highest priority is to access the data on my
PC hard drive... So how about trying to reboot my
PC with a Windows XP installation CD?

Thanks in advance,
FL

Felix, so you are saying that you tried step 3  and that didnt help.?
You can try a Repair Install.  Set the cd drive to first boot
device in Bios.   Check here at Michael's site.   But seeif you can
find some help at this site first.

Thank-you Rich for your reply. Method 1 and 2 obviously do not work as
I can't
log-in. For method 3 I put in the Windows XP installation CD. But I
don't
know how to start the "Microsoft Recovery Console".
The PC boots from the installation CD and then I've been given the
option
to install Windows. I wasn't sure whether I would lose my data with
a new installation of Windows. So I didn't do it.

Meanwhile I read in many forums. I found a helpful advice of getting
a "Knoppix" CD - this is a Linux compilation which allows one to
boot a system and operating it from the CD. Actually it DOES WORK.
Now, I'm able to access my data. I'm going to back them up at the
moment. It's a bit of a hassle. I'm copying the data on a USB stick
and from the there on my laptop.

But STILL I would love to know of how to fix my Windows XP
system!!!
