AUTOCHECK

Rick

Hello,

I installed a new hard drive and some memory the other day
and everything was fine. Then, after a restart, windows
XP started up in classic mode and when I tried to select
shutdown it said something like "you are not authorized to
shutdown this computer" so I had to do a reset of the
system. When it started backup, it stopped on a black
screen and said something like "Autochk prg not found
skipping autocheck" and then my computer would reboot
itself. It kept doing this in a constant cycle. I'd be
grateful for any insite on this problem.

Hi Rick,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager

Verify: "autocheck autochk*" the entry should be "autocheck autochk *" with
a space between autochk and the *.

Since the suggestions typically have the afflicted user edit the
registry, run SFC (system file checker), or some other Windows action,
but since the OP posted that their system blue screens with the autochk
crash, those suggestion are unusable. Maybe this error gets bypassed if
the user can manage to boot successfully into Safe mode so they can then
edit the registry or run SFC.

As I understand, autochk gets run when Disk Management thinks there has
some corruption of the hard disk. So maybe you could boot from the
WinXP install CD, run the first Repair option which puts you into
Recovery Console mode, and run 'chkdsk /r'.

Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down or restart
your computer

Those points are in general. However:

This is generally where the error message appears as well.

Can't even get into Recovery Mode (to bypass the autocheck process
starting up - and crashing)? Doesn't the "install" (which is only
temporary) of the Recovery Console from the install CD by selecting the
first Repair end up creating a ramdisk onto which the RC files are
placed? This would eliminate trying to use a real install of RC on the
hard drive where the file system is possibly corrupt or in jeopardy. As
I recall, when I load the RC from the install CD, the "drive" that I get
for RC is not my C: drive (for Windows) but the drive letter assigned to
the ramdisk. I suppose the RC running from the ramdisk still has to be
able to read C: (or whatever is the system partition) well enough to get
at the SAM database for you to login under the Administrator account.

The KB article #831426 seems to indicate that the user should be able to
load the ramdisk'ed copy of the Recovery Console to run 'chkdsk /r' from
there.
