Cannot download large files in XP

Veliko

Hello.

I'm having problems downloading ANYTHING larger than about 500k. When
I click to download, the "File Download window" comes up, asks where
to save, does about 20-30k and nothing else - no modem light or
anything. I also use GetRight and get a similar result: GetRight hangs
by retrying hundreds of times.

At first I thought is was the sites but then checked on my other 3
computers which downloaded the same files just fine. (One is a
notebook running 98SE the other 2 are running XP).

The problem started for no apparent rteason as far as I know - no new
software or hardware changes.

In an effort to correct the problem, I cleared the temp/cookie files
and even tried saving on different hard drives (I have 5 HD's). I've
run System Mechanic to clean up the registry and AdAware to check for
spyware.

I'm running XP Pro with all the critical updates, IE version
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

One more piece of info is that I cannot copy large files from any of
the machines on the network. I AM able to see the files fine but when
I attempt to drag a large file (1meg-plus) to a folder, I can move it
about 5 pixels and the window hangs.

Any suggestions or help from anyone?

Thank you so much

Try this fix found in an other post.

Subject: Re: Download size limitation?

When I try to download certain Microsoft XP updates, such as .NET
framework, which are large files, the download stops at 4 MB each time.
I don't know if this is a problem with IE, Microsoft's server, or my ISP
(on a DSL). Is it a temp directory limitation? Is there something I should
tweak in the registry? I have a 40 GB hard drive which is about 1/3 full, so
that isn't the problem..

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Then on another group someone said to decrease the value for the receive
window (RWin) setting (on a DSL tweaker) to half of what it was, and that
worked immediately. Something about with a too high RWin setting the server
thinks you are disconnected and stops sending the file. Anyway, it worked.
