Cannot download from certain websites

This is a strange problem. IE 6.0 SP1 works fine most of the time.
Here is an example: When I try to download from the windows update
page I get all of my updates downloaded and installed fine(I run XP
home). When I try to download from the microsoft pocket PC site I get
the .jpg symbol in upper left corner of web window after a long pause
and everything stops. Seems like it is trying to download- msg bar at
bottom of screen says "Downloading" but the microsoft download wizard
never pops up (The one that says "save to disc " or "Run from current
location"). This also happens to me downloading gaming mods from
certain sites. I can get them from some but not others. Has to be an
XP setting or IE setting causing this I think but I ran out of hair to
pull out. I have turned off all of my McAffe Virus and Firewall,
removed my download accelerators still no good. I also have an old
Windows 98 machine and it does not have this problem it runs IE 5.5
SP1 and can download successfully on the sites my XP machine cannot.
Can anyone help?

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
