Cannot Download Files

I am having a problem with IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.
Whenever I try to download any file (pdf, zip, mp3... anything), the File
Download - Security Warning window appears. If I chose "Save," the Save As
window appears with the Save In directory. I then choose a direcotry (i.e.,
desktop) and say Save. The file appears to download and the window
disppears. But when I go to fid the file, it is not there.

If I push "Open," the file again seems to download, but the appropriate
program does not open.

Has anyone seen this occur before? Is there any fix?

Hi,
Longshot, but you might have to refresh the desktop to see the file (F5
key.)

The browser cache (Temporary Internet Files folder) may be corrupted. Delete
it- a new folder will be created on restart.

Make sure that you can see hidden files (Folder Options> View) Then
login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode) and delete the affected
TIF folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files]

Set the size of the new TIF folder at 50-60 MB

A download manager or download accelerator may be causing the problem. Are
you running either?

Hope this helps,

Hi Don,

I've tried each of these - to no avail. Nothing seems to work.

Is there a way to reinstall IE 6 from scratch?

Hi,
Run this test... startup in Safe Mode with Networking.
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:

If you can download files in Safe Mode, you should be looking for the
third-party program that isn't running in Safe Mode, but is causing the
problem when it is running.

Then try re-registering the DLLs listed in this article:
281679 - You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens
After You Click a Link: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679
If it works, it will be much easier/faster that reinstalling IE.

Otherwise, the recommended method is to uninstall SP2 (if it was installed
as an update.)
