Backing up active x controls

Hello group, thanks for reading. I have an active x control which I can't
download any more. Is there a way of backing it up, and if so, how would I
re-install it? Of course, I can just copy the file from
c:\windows\downloaded program files and save it somewhere, but there's a
load of registry entries for it also.

Winsows XP SP2, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

TIA Tony.

Hi Tony,

This is a guess, I have not tried it myself. Try cut and paste from your DPF
folder to a backup folder. I think the shell will change all of your
registry references for you or you may have to re-register the control
yourself (first de-register the control from the DPF location .. actually
you could also try deleting the control from the DPF, since this is a
special folder I think it will de-register itself when it is deleted.).

Also why can't you download the file anymore? Is it damaged? There is a
repair option on the context menu in the DPF folder.

Advice given with no guarantees.

Regards.

Hi, thanks for your reply. No, it's not damaged, it's working fine, but if I
ever need it again the link for the download doesn't work.

It's the well-known IEprint control (referred elsewhere in this group) by
Adrian Bateman, lately of Visiontech. I think he's now concentrating on IE7.
Anyway, the download link just sends you back to the previous page.

I've heard that the problem's solved in IE7 anyway, so maybe I won't need
it. Still, I'll bear your advice in mind.

Thanks again, Tony.

Create a folder on your HDD called IEPrint.

Add www.visiontech.ltd.uk to IE's Trusted Zone.

Go to http://www.visiontech.ltd.uk/software/index.html

Click on the link that says "Internet Explorer Fitted-Width Printing"

Save the new page as Web page-Complete in the folder you created and
use this page to re-install the ActiveX control if needed.

Close IE (important!)
Open IE
View-Toolbars-Customize
On left hand side highlight "Fit Width Print" and press the Add button.
The new button will appear on the toolbar.

BTW, the ActiveX control can still be installed using the web site above.
Did it today just to see. Just make sure you have the site as TRUSTED and
follow the above procedure.
When successful, you will see the ActiveX control icon in the Internet
Options-General-Settings-View Objects panel.

My suggestion for saving page to hard drive doesn't work. The website is
still online and you can still get it there.

Add www.visiontech.ltd.uk to IE's Trusted Zone.
Go to http://www.visiontech.ltd.uk/software/index.html
Click on the link that says "Internet Explorer Fitted-Width Printing"

Umm....nope, it doesn't work for me. But I think I've made some progress.
From the file properties page, I copied this:

http://www.visiontech.ltd.uk/software/download/IEPrint.CAB

to my address bar and the .CAB file downloaded to my hard drive. So I guess
I can use that somehow.

I'm not worried at the moment because it's working fine, I just want to have
a backup in case it gets wiped.

Tony.
