Cannot do anything with the CD Writing Wizard

M

madkingsoup

Just recently I noticed that XP's built-in CD Writing Wizard wasn't
working.

I can burn and erase CD-RWs and burn CD-Rs like there's no tomorrow
using media players (WMP, Real, iTunes) and BHA's Recorder, but XP's
own will not work, although it recognises which type of disc is in (RW
or R) and will let me create temporary files ready to burn.

I've noticed that there's no "Recording" tab in the drive properties,
and when I click on "Write these files" or "Erase disk" all I get is
the "Default Beep" sound but no action.

I've checked in the registry for odd policies, and I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling the drive itself, but all to no avail.
I'm assuming that something I've got installed has disabled it, but
even removing BHA's Recorder made no difference.

Is there a fix to this or am I just going to have to bite the bullet
and buy something worthwhile? (BHA's is a nightmare to use, but it
*was* free!)

:(

Update: TuneUp Registry Editor seemed to be partially responsible.
Having restored the registry backup from one of its sweeps the
"Recording" tab is back.

However, all other issues are still there. :(

Some 3rd party burning software will disable XP's burning capability.
In start | Run | services.msc is the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service started?

It was set to "manual" but I started it anyway. Still the same problem
- the CD Writing Wizard just won't even start.

I just found something *very* interesting - for whatever strange reason
I tried right-clicking on the CD icon and choosing "Write these files
to CD" and it works.

So the problem isn't with the CD writing itself, it's with the shell,
by the look of it. It's the links in the CD Writing Tasks pane that
don't work - how do I fix these?

You said you are using a third-party registry cleaner. Do a search with
Google Groups Advanced in this newsgroup for "registry cleaners". Read
the many, many posts. Bottom line, most professionals do not recommend
using a registry cleaner. A registry cleaner is unnecessary in XP.
Uninstall the one you have and see if things work now.

Additionally, the third-party software may have caused problems by
adding entries to the right-click shell extension context menu.
Troubleshoot with the free ShellExView program which you can get here:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Disable all non-MS right-click context menu extensions and then enable
them one at a time, testing after each change.

I found that, which was why I restored everything TuneUp had done and
got some funcionality back.

I tried ShellExView and there was nothing there that made any
difference. As I said, the right-clikc context menu works perfectly
with the Cd Writing Wizard - it's the links in the left hand Task Pane
that do nothing at all. :-(

I have just run into this problem too. Wonder whether you have found a fix
for it yet. As you say, the right-click context menu works OK, as does the
File menu in My Computer, and if I eject the disk the wizard starts (and
tells me the disk has been ejected!), but clicking the links in the task pane
just triggers Windows XP Ding.wav

Just found the solution! I used ShellExView on another machine which is OK,
and found an entry "ShellFolder for CD Burning", which was missing from this
machine. Found the relevant registry key, exported it from the good machine,
and imported it into this machine, and, lo-and-behold, all is restored.

William,

I read the above post with interest as I have exactly the same problem as
Madkingsoup. I tried to follow your explanation (I am a fairly novice user)
and was able to do as you suggested and make a .reg file out of your post by
copying / pasting. When I tried to import it into the registry, however, it
said it was not a "registry script". Am I doing something wrong (i.e. copying
too much / too little) or what?

you include the < and > from my earlier post? These were intended to be the

spaces and blank lines - not sure whether that matters in this case, but you
may not be able to copy the exact .reg file from my post.

Your best bet may be to find a friend or colleague with a working registry
and to export the key from their registry (create a .reg file), copy it to a
disk, and then import from that. Would gladly email you a copy of mine, but
doubt either of us wants to exchange real email addresses over a public forum

William,

Tried various ways to copy your info into a wordpad or notepad file and call
it a .reg file but the registry still fails to recognise it as a reg file..
pardon my ignorance, but if I ask someone to copy that file for me, just how
do they find it??

i appreciate your help on this..you seem to be th eonly one who has gotten a
handle on this problem.

I just tried this on my machine, and it works OK for me. I selected the
text from the post, copied it, and pasted it into my text editor (I use a
program called EditPad, but Notepad will do just as well; DON'T use WordPad
since that is a word processor and will add formatting etc. to the saved
file, which you certainly don't want). I then saved the file from the text
editor as test.reg. I then ran regedit from the Run command and used
File>Import to import test.reg into the registry, and received confirmation
that the process had been successful

Do be careful playing with the registry. There is always a caveat about
doing this, and it may be wise to get help from someone who is familiar with
regedit. They should also know how to find the key in a good registry and
export it. That is what I was suggesting, i.e. get someone to run regedit on
their machine, navigate to the key you need, which they should be able to do
fairly easily and quickly from my post, and use File>Export to save the key
to a file called something.reg. You should then copy something.reg to a
floppy or other media, and transfer it to your machine. You then install it
either by double-clicking something.reg or by running regedit as I did, and
using File>Import to import something.reg.

Good luck!

I would be really interested to know what removed this registry entry (form
your machine and mine). I suspect RealPlayer, which has a reputation for
tampering with things it should leave alone, and I wonder whether you have
installed that application.

You are a bloody marvel!!! I used Notepad instead of Wordpad and, lo and
behold, it worked. I have been scratching my head and mumbling for a quite a
while..tonight I sleep soundly. Next time you are in the land down under, I
owe you a beer.

My recent changes have been "Skype" for free net-phone calls, installation
of a Logitec camera and software and a purchased CD label writer (Dick Smith
brand). We did have Real One player up until about 6 weeks ago..that is when
I deleted it??? (my son left home so I did not need it) This problem may have
occured then (?) possibly the deinstall did something?

Thanks again for you patience and assistance.
