Cannot detect usb automatically

In my xp prof labtop, did a system recovery and all went smoothly except to
find out that it does not auto detect any usb devices. All the drivers were
loaded from the Recovery cd.
In my Device Manager. there is no devices without drivers (that is there is
no exclamation marks etc)

However, under the DVD-CD rom tree-TEAC DV-W28EA and when I highlight this
device, there will be 2 monitor icons on the tools bar above with red cross
each (uninstall and disabled respectively).

Under the Mice and pointed devices -1/ Alps ponting device which is from the
labtop. When I highlight it, there will be 1 icon (uninstall)
2/ unknown device (which
is the usb mouse) and when I high light it, there will be 2 monitor icons
(uninstall and disable respectively)

When I try to install the external usb, after many attempts, it will be
detected under the USB controller branch. I cannot get it to be shown under
the hard disk catogory.

As a result, when I click my computer, I cannot see the ext.hdd but if I go
to my pc> right click manage>disk management> it will show the presence of
the hdd/partitions.

I try to delete all these devices(hdd, Alps and other devices, TEAC
DV-W28EA) and reboot, the same thing happen that it will not detect the usb
devices apart from the ext hdd (and the usb mouse), it will be under the USB
category.

So how can I set it to auto detect the usb devices. In the bios its set to
"enable' usb devices. Please help, thank you

You can assign a permanent letter for the USB drive in the Disk Manager.
Right click on the Drive and select "assign letter and access path to drive"
follow the steps and assign a letter that won't be used by another drive
anytime soon so it cannot be reassigned by the system to other drives, and
always use the same USB port for the drive to prevent similar conflicts.
