cannot delete subweb

C. M. G.

In fp03, I have a subweb that I cannot delete. When trying to delete it, I
get an error message

Server error: There is no web named "/web/subweb".

I have done tools|recalculate hyperlinks, and I have checked in explorer --
the files are still there.

How can I delete this subweb?

Thanks,

Clem.

How are you trying to delete it, and is this on the remote server or your PC?

Thomas,

In the parent web, there are several folders, some of them are subwebs,
others are simply folders for the parent web. I right-click the subweb
folder and click delete on the pop-up dialog. I get a confirmation request,
I click yes, and I get the error message noted in my original e-mail. Any
idea what is going on?

Thanks,

Clem.

Try this:

Open the subweb itself, then try to delete it via File | Delete Web (I
believe that's where it is. I'm not where I can access my FP 2003 at this
time).

I was using the FP 2000 extensions initially with FP 2003 and ran into many
problems trying to delete or create subwebs. After I upgraded to FP 2002
extensions, the problem went away, except for the problem subwebs where it
gave me the same error "there is no web named".

Tom,

First, my reply to Thomas Rowe's earlier posting was incomplete. I am
dealing with webs on my local HD.

Second, when I try to open the subweb by double clicking it, I get this
message:

Server error: There is no web named "/web/subweb".

When I try to open the subweb from the menu bar, I get this error message:

Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved
or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the
server.

Needless to say, I do not have this problem with other subwebs...

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks,

Clem.

Clem,

Are you working with a disk-based web or server-based (IIS) web on your PC?

Ok, One option is to remove the extensions and it meta file from the specific web site, then using
Windows Explorer delete the specific subweb, then re-apply the extensions.

One thing you should try before doing the above, is to run a check on the extensions and select all
of the check boxes on the right side of the dialog, this may repair the problem and allow you delete
the subweb.

NOTE: Removing the extensions will revert all subwebs back to folders, as well remove any unique
permissions, which you will have to re-setup.

Just a thought Thomas,

What if he converted the subweb to a folder? Might he be able to delete it
then?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

I am not sure that would work, since he can't access the subweb, but it is worth a shot.

Hmmmmm..... He shouldn't need to access the subweb per se.
From the root web, right-click on the subweb, select convert to folder
right click the folder....delete...voilla (might have to delete child
folders/files under)
Should work yeah?

So select it and then right clicking the subweb/folder, FP has to see it as subweb to convert it
back to a folder.

OK, so the question is why is FP not recognizing it as a subweb?

At this point I'd look into how I created the subweb in the first place and
work from there.
What is the worst case scenario if I just used windows expolorer and
deleted? I could still recover from the recycle bin if there was a problem.

There are only 3 ways to create a subweb:

1. Create New Web
2. Convert a folder
3. Create subweb from the FP Extensions Admin pages.

You will create problem using any application to modify files within a FP web, and deleting a subweb
via Windows Explorer will create the same type of problems the current user is having.

Gentlemen:

FP won't let me convert it to a folder.

I can delete it with explorer, but FP still thinks it's there (in some way).

The subweb was created from FP, but for some reason, the program crashed,
that's where the problems arose.

My solution: I deleted the parent web on the HD and restored it and various
subwebs from the remote web.

Thank you!

Clem.
