cannot defragment - error message

Terri

I, OF LATE, KEEP GETTING THIS MESSAGE EACH TIME I TRY TO DEFRAGMENT. CAN
ANYONE HELP? PLEASE.
MMC cannot open the file C:/WINDOWS/system32/dfrg.msc.
this may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console , or was
created by a later version of MMC also be because you do not have the
sufficient access rights to the file.
ALSO - when I clk google i have a different message.
#gen_toolbar# is unable toload its config file.
if you have recently upgraded to a newer version of the #gen_toolbar# and
have not restarted your computer since the upgrade, please try restarting.
if problem persists please re install the #gen_toolbar#.
I have no idea whats going on, how it happened or how to deal with it. !!
can anyone help ??
TERRI.

Using Google/Google Groups - I located:

Apply the .MSC association fix from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_mscfix.zip

BTW, you can also use command-line Defrag (defrag.exe).
Type defrag.exe /? in Command Prompt.

Good Luck!

Open a run command and type in these DLLs:
regsvr32 dfragsna.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll click [OK]
Open the Windows explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\Inf =
in the right Pane/window locate this file dfrg.inf right click on it and
select install and reboot your computer then try to run Defragment.
How do you manage your memory, do you set a size or let windows manage for
you?.
HTH.
Regards,
nass

MMC cannot open the file C:/WINDOWS/system32/dfrg.msc.

Whilst this is an old thread, I had this very same problem recently and here is the simple solution without all the fear mongering I've seen on other Forum sites advising peple to Reinstall XP.

Solution:

Basic steps (type the instructions below leaving out the Quotes ""):

1. Click on Start>Run

2. Enter "cmd" and press Enter. This wil take you onto the Black Command Window. Next: Copy & Paste item 3 minus the quotes""

3. Enter "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml3.dll" and press Enter.

After you Press Enter above, be patient, it may take a few seconds before the dialog box referred to below appears, otherwise you might well think nothing has happened.
After it appears, you're ready to go. Now try your Defrag.

A dialog box should appear telling you that the registration was successful. The path may need to be adjusted if your installation differs (e.g., on a standard Win2k install).
