I have tried following suggestions in "Help" but the option of animating by
word does not appear to be available. How do I switch this on? I have
PowerPoint 2003 Business version. Can anyone help?

Have you tried animating the text and using the drop down menu on the
animation timeline on the right, select Effect Options and then Animate text
By Word...

I dont know how to animate the text on one line as cue-abe clicks... but you
can change the delay.

If anyone knows how to click-cue through the animation, word by word, on a
single text element please help us! I still do this one animation as a
multiple slide build... or use separate text boxes for each word...
cumbersome!

Hope this helps some...

First, apply an animation effect to the text box. Next, in the Custom
Animation Task Pane, right-click on the animation effect and choose "Effect
Options". Next to Animate Text, select "By word."

I don't think you can do what I think you want to do. Others have pointed
you to the PowerPoint version of "animating by word" which simply has a
whole sentence fly in at once, but the words are staggered. This is general
an annoying and useless effect. What you probably want to do is have each
word fly in separately, for example, clicking once to bring in "The,"
clicking again to bring in "cat," clicking again to bring in "is," and
clicking again to bring in "dead." PowerPoint can only do this if you put
each word in a separate text box even though this has many more potential
uses than what PowerPoint is capable of doing easily.

Thanks for your help. I can only do separate words with separate text boxes
and alignment is a drag!

Quickest way to align text boxes across one line is select all the boxes for
that line (hold shift and click to select multiple boxes...) and use the Draw
toobar...

Draw > Align and Distribute ... select the alignment you want... once you
have each line horzontal group each line, line by line, then select all the
groups and Distribute Vertically using the same Draw>align menu...

Hopefully this speeds up your work!

Use the alignment tools under Draw|Align or Distribute. But getting the word
spacing right could be a bear. I'd probably type the text in one textbox to
use as a guide and delete it when I had the individual boxes placed.

As others have said powerpoint wont do this really. Animate by word is fairly
useless.

You can emulate "fade in by word on click" by placing a shape over each word
with no line and fill set to background and then animate exits for each box.
The shapes dont have to be very exact as they have a bground fill.
