Cannot access websites that require userid & password

Websites that require userid & password will not display.
The PC attempts to access the page but it just stops and
never connects. There is no error message. An example is
my university's email which is Webmail. I have been able
to access the website off and on but for the last several
days have been unable to access it. The PC is a Gateway
450X accessing the Internet thru a wireless router and a
cable modem. The PC has Windows XP Professional and I'm
using Internet Exporer.
