Cannot access Remote Desktop Connection

I

Ilyak

Hi,

I cannot establish a connection to the romote computer
using the RDC from my local XP Pro laptop. I'm using a
cable modem to connect to the internet. I know for sure
that the IP address that I'm using is correct, because I
can access it using my XP Home computer. Here is the
error that I'm getting:

The client could not establish a connection to the remote
computer.
The most likely causes for this error are:
1) Remote connections might not be enabled at the remote
computer.
2) The maximum number of connections was exceeded at the
remote computer.
3) A network error occured while establishing the
connection.

FYI: My Internet Connection Firewall is disabled and
Remote Desktop is enabled.

Please help!

Is your laptop on the same network as your XP home machine when you
try to connect to the remote computer? It sounds like there may be a
network issue (perhaps ISP portblocking) for your laptop connection to
the network.

Also, try "ping remotecomputeripaddresshere" from the laptop (and the
XP home machine) to see if you have any connectivity to the machine
from the laptop.

No, XP Home machine and my laptop are not networked but
are connected to the internet via a cable modems and same
ISP. I tried pinging the remote IP address from my
laptop, but it was unsucessful. It gave me "Request Time
Out" message. I tried pretty much everyhting and I dont
know what to do next. Do I need maybe uninstall Norton
Antivirus?

Thank you, your help is welcomed.

Bottom line is that after setting up everything according
to instructions on both remote and host computers, when
one puts in their IP address the thing times out and
simply doesn't work. There needs to be a concrete and
usable answer out there, not just a bunch of "if
applicable" "domain this and that" suggestions. The
remote capability is one of the main reasons I bought the
XP Professional upgrade and it seems a shame to have to
A) Not be able to use it or B) have to pay some $245.00
to tech support to talk around the subject.

My system has recently developed this same problem.
It used to work. All Microsoft updates have been installed.
Norton AntiVirus is up to date.

By use of the "Active Ports" program

http://www.ntutility.com/freeware.html

I have determined that there is no software listening on port 3389.
Remote Desktop is enabled at Control Panel->System->Remote

The remote desktop connection port number has not been changed
from the default 3389 in the registry. i.e.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp
"PortNumber"=dword:00000d3d

where 00000d3d in hexadecimal is 3389 in decimal.

For some unknown reason the software that is supposed to be listening
on port 3389 is not running.

There is nothing in the event log to indicate the problem.

Does anyone know which program (.exe, .dll, etc.) is responsible for port
3389?

Go to Computer Management and see if you have the Terminal Service
"service" running (or enabled). Also double check that the
selection for Remote Desktop is still enabled under the Remote Tab -
two or three people have reported that a security fix has reset
this...

Norton Antivirus wouldn't affect this... Maybe you have a firewall on
your machine (like ZoneAlarm or Norton Personal Firewall) - with some
of the firewalls, you must "allow" programs to access the internet.

I found that something had disabled "Terminal Services". Once I
set "Terminal Services to "Manual" and started the service, Remote
Desktop was again working.

What problem are you seeing with Remote Desktop? (or are you llya or
llyak?)

The majority of the problem with remote desktop relate to your
internet connectivity. Do you have a firewall? If so, are you
forwarding TCP Port 3389? Are you using the correct public IP
address?

To test that Remote Desktop is working on your system (locally), type
in the following command: "telnet localhost 3389". If you get an
error that said you could not open connection to your host, then you
do not have Remote Desktop enabled properly. If you get a response
other than the could not open connection error (like a blank screen),
Remote Desktop is listening and waiting for connections. In this
case, difficulties with the connection typically lie at your network
connection (i.e., firewall, router, ISP, etc).

No, I dont have any firewalls except interanl one from XP
Pro, which is disabled. I think I used most of the
options that I had and still cannot get it up and
running. Do you think maybe it has something to do with
non compatible hardware?

Different question now - do you have a router? Also, what address
space are your IP addresses in? I am starting to get the sneaking
suspicion that they may be private IP's...
