3 error causes displayed while using Remote Desktop

Hi, I have been trying to access my Desktop in the office Remotely from my
laptop and I keep getting an error message - The client could not establish a
connection to the remote computer.

The most likely causes for this error are:
Remote Connections might not be enabled at the remote computer
The maximum number of connections was exceeded at the remote computer.
A network error occurred while establishing the connection.

I went to the registry and performed the following steps:

Click on Start > Run.

Type REGEDIT and press Enter.

Navigate to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService \Parameters

Delete the KEY named ?Certificate?.

Close the registry editor.

Restart the computer.

This did not help

Hope that someone can help me find a work around.

Thanks,

Are you running XP Pro SP2 fully patched?

What version of the Remote Desktop client are you using? Open the Remote
Desktop connectoid and click on the small terminal icon at the upper left.
Select "About"...

Do you have TCP Port 3389 forwarded/opened in any firewall/router the work
PC is behind?

Are you calling the correct public IP of the work PC or firewall/router the
work PC is behind?

From your work desktop PC go to the http://www.canyouseeme.org site and run
the test on TCP Port 3389. How do you connect to work from your laptop, ie.
a VPN connection then Remote Desktop through the VPN or just a straight call
using Remote Desktop?

You also might consider upgrading to a newer version of the Remote Desktop
client if its allowed, ie. if your laptop is company owned you may need to
clear that with your work network administrators for example.

Hey Sooner,

I tried to check the ports and used Mirosoft PortQryUI and got the following:

=============================================

Starting portqry.exe -n 127.0.0.1 -e 3389 -p TCP ...

Querying target system called:

127.0.0.1

Attempting to resolve IP address to a name...

IP address resolved to localhost

querying...

TCP port 3389 (unknown service): LISTENING
portqry.exe -n 127.0.0.1 -e 3389 -p TCP exits with return code 0x00000000.

--------------------------------------------
I also did a netstat-a and that also showed the port 3389 as listening.

BUT the website canuseeme.org gave me the following error message:

Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xxx.0.10 on port (3389)
Reason: Connection timed out

---------------------------------------

So it is a little hard to figure out if the port is bloked or open!

FYI, i connect to the work PC using a VPN and then run remote desktop. The
errors starting coming in only over the last weekend while i was using it
fine before that.

In addition, i am able to access the c: drive as well as other folders on my
work PC using "My Network Places" and yet still remote desktop does not work.

any clues/ ideas? thanks again.

Can you ping the work PC from the laptop while connected with the VPN? If
you can't you will never be able to connect with Remote Desktop. Since you
use a VPN the http://www.canyouseeme.org test will fail because TCP Port
3389 is not open on your work firewall. That is normal in this case.

Can you connect to the PC from another local PC on the work LAN using it
local LAN IP address, ie. not through the VPN tunnel?

Can you connect to the PC from another remote PC through the VPN tunnel?

Hi Sooner,

I cannot conect to my work PC using any other PC on the work LAN AND i get a
different error message that is practically a one liner saying that i
encountered a network error and that i should try again. BUT, if i try
something like \\computername or IP\C$ or any other folder, i can connect to
those folders on my work PC and access files there. In addition, i can also
do this using my laptop. Also, i can use netmeeting to connect and use my
work machine but then it is a little slow and i do not have complete
functionality.

I have not tried to connect to the WORK pc using a vpn tunnel from another
laptop but i will try and do that as well.

Any other suggestions/ thoughts that you think might help?

Well, if you can't connect from another local PC on your work LAN then the
issue is on the target PC. Are you running any software firewall on the PC
or something like NAV worm protection or MS OneCare Live? Something is
blocking incoming Remote Desktop requests on that PC.

No... No further ideas. The bottom line is if you can't connect to the PC
with Remote Desktop from another local PC on the same LAN its something on
the work PC that is blocking incoming Remote Desktop requests. I would get
your local network administrators to help...

Good luck...
