Troubleshooting Remote Desktop

What is happening that sometimes, I am able to use Remote Desktop on my
machine, but sometimes when I use it it cause my machine to hang. I
actually have to reset the power to it to get it to work - All I get is a
blue screen. I try to use shutdown -i, on it but it never reboots the
machine.

How can one troubleshoot a remote desktop connection gone bad.

I get the following error when attempting to connect to the computer:
Remote Desktop Disconnected
The Remote connection has timed out. Please try connecting to the remote
computer again.

Remote Desktop Disconnected
The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer.

The most likely causes for this error are:
1) Remote connections might not be enabled at the remote computer.
2) The maximum number of connections was exceeded at the remote computer.
3) A network error occurred while establishing the connection

The machines is at Windows XP Service Pack 1 level

I am having the same problem as this. It was working ok until recently but seems to have just given up. I thought my firewall might be the problem but the port is open. Really am at a loss.

I can't see the rest of the thread this message relates to.

It is better to lay out your issue from square 1, since the same apparent
symptoms may have divergent causes.

Have you checked on whether 1) you have the correct public IP address for
your firewall/router, and 2) that the IP that the firewall/router is
forwarding traffic on the port to is, in fact, the current private IP held
by the XP Pro host?
