cannot access or delete restored data from backup

This is my problem briefly, I need any solution as soon as possible because
it is very critical..

Using my old laptop, I backuped my documents directory on an external drive
using windows xp backup tool..

now I am using a new laptop.. I connected my external hard disc to it and
started the restore process to copy the files from the external drive to the
new laptop hard disc..

but.. I cannot open the directories.. as if there is some encryption from my
old laptop my documents directory.. I did not manually set encryption, but
perhaps My Documents directory was a PRIVATE folder..

now I cannot even delete those directories.. so I have two problems..

1. I cannot access my restored files on my new laptop
2. I cannot even delete my restored files on my new laptop

I do not want to rebuild everything from the recovery cd, as I have wasted a
lot of time already configuring the new laptop and doing the windows
updates, not to mention that even if I do that, how will I be able to access
my restored files on the new laptop?!!

Another issue, you might ask me why I used the backup utility.. it is
because when i tried transfering my documents directory normally to the
external drive, sometimes big files cannot be transfered, and I get an error
and the whole process halts.. By the way, I still have my old laptop with
the my documents directory, so if there is no possible solution to all this,
i will have to move all the my documents directory from the old laptop to
the new one using a network cable or something, but please try to help with
more practical solutions to my above problems..

thanks a lot in advance !

You need to take ownership of those files and folders.
