my external hard drive, which is not turned on all the time has a copy of
"my documents" on it. as i put
new files into "my documents" on my laptop the files are not automatically
copied to the external hard
drive. i want the "my doxuments" folder on the external drive to be an exact
copy of "my documents"
folder on my laptop. is there an easy way of getting windows xp to do this
for me please?

Bruce,

You might try SyncToy (part of Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP):
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx>

I've never used it personally but it may be what you're looking for.
