Hi All:

Can Vista disable the "Automatic restore point" but keep manual restore
point?

When I try to disable the "Automatic restore point", Vista always prompt
to completely stop the "System restore".

However, actually I just want to stop the "Automatic restore point"
creation and I want to keep the ability creating restore point manually
when necessary.

Thank you.

The automatic restore points are handled by the Task Scheduler. They can be
disabled there.

Click on the start Orb and type Task scheduler, then select it at the top.
Select Task Scheduler Library (by clicking on the small arrow next to the
words), then Microsoft, Windows. Then scroll down to System Restore and click
on it. In the right hand column under Actions, click on disable. You can
always reenable it there if you want.

Click on the start Orb and type Task scheduler,

"scheduler" is enough... I just tried it.

Thanks for posting this. I just looked through the entire list of
scheduled items. The configurability is amazing. Another reason
Vista is better than XP.

I would like to have
the ability to choose which restore points to save if i cannot disable
the applications from creating new restore points. Is another option to
find the actual restore file and keep that backed up on an external? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't stop restore points being automatically set by certain programs
and by Windows updates.

Can't choose which one to keep.

Can't save them elsewhere.

The only option - and it's a good one - is to use a backup/imaging
program like Acronis True Image to save a copy of your system when you
have it the way you want it.

Sorry to bump this up, but I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how to
disable applications and windows update from creating restore points. I
previously disabled the scheduled tasks for system restore, but I have
found that automatic restore points are made by certain programs and
windows updates. I am positive that A-squared spyware removal tool set a
point on install, but i am not sure about the update. Regardless, I had
a set restore point I wished to save, but now it is gone when i need it
the most (due to windows keeping only the newest). I would like to have

Restore points are cumulative. Therefore, you can't pick and choose
among them for deletion, although you can create manual retore points
and name them.

Thanks for the recommend, seems to be a nice tool. Just for my
inquisitive nature though, the files would have to be saved somewhere,
therefore wouldnt it be possible to snatch a file and replace it later?
i.e. MANUALLY saving a restore point(i stress manually)

You can manually make a restore point, but you can't choose where it
will be kept. And you can't pick and choose something out of a
restore point to restore.

With Acronis True Image, you can do either or both.
