Which antivirus are you running?
This problem can be caused by an incompatible antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, NOT just disabled.
I suggest that you do a temporary uninstall of your antivirus.
You can always reinstall it if there is no improvement.

If there is improvement, download and install a more
compatible antivirus like:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

Gary and everyone else - thanks a bunch for your advise. I downloaded AVG
and deleted McAfee and my email worked instantly. I really appreciate your
advice.

Hi - don't know if I am in the right place or not but I get the error message
"go to new mail first - I am old and don't understand all the information. -
It had been working fine - (e-mail address removed). Would appreciate your
answer. Thanks

Sorry, I have never seen the message "Go to new mail first."
What were you doing at the time, what screen were you in?
Is that the complete error message?

I am using the AGV free edition virus protection.
My problem is on my laptop which is Windows Vista with Windows Mail. I also
have the AGV free edition on it.
The laptop was in the shop for power loss, everything was working fine
before I turned it in for repair and now it's the spread sheet I can't print
from Microsoft Works 8.5 as well as receiving e-mail with Windows mail.
Hope I havn't confused you by all the above. I am working from the desk for
this response.

I understand you can't receive email. Can you send? If so,
what happens when you send an email to yourself?
Is there an error message when you try to receive?
Does it appear to go through the motions of contacting the server?
Does it respond (in the status bar) with "No New Messages"?
When you check the server via webmail, are there messages waiting to be downloaded?
