Can Receive but Not Send

I am using Outlook XP with a modem and an ISP. It
RECEIVES e-mail OK. But when it attempts to SEND e-mail,
it generates the error: "Task 'ad - Sending and
Receiving' reported an error (0x80042109). Outlook is
unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your
ISP." The Outgoing Server port is set to the default
(25), and SSL is turned off. The Outgoing Mail Server
name is set to the words provided by my ISP. My ISP says
that the problem is my Outlook setup, not his mail
server. Help.

Mariah,

"Telnet Servername 25" returns an error message. It says
that it could not open a connection to the host via port
25.

Mariah,

Incoming Mail Server (POP3): adv-management.com
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): adv-management.com

I can connect to that server , so it does exist. You probably have
anti-virus or firewall software that is preventing the connection. If you
have such software, try disabling it and see if you can send. If that fixes
the problem, see if there are updates to the software to fix the problem.

I was using the Norton firewall and the Windows XP
firewall. I have tried with and without both firewalls.
The problem continues.

However, I have continued to troubleshoot and I just made
a discovery. In addition to my normal ISP (which I use
almost all the time), I also have AOL installed on my PC.
While troubleshooting, I closed my original ISP modem
connection and started AOL, then opened Outlook XP. This
used the same modem, but a different ISP. I did NOT make
any changes to my Outlook setup, including I did NOT
change the Outlook "Internet E-mail settings" to AOL.
Outlook continued to be setup for my original ISP. The
problem went away. I was able to send and receive e-mail
with Outlook. As soon as I closed AOL and started my ISP
again, the problem returned. (No firewalls were invoked
while doing these tests.) I can't find anything wrong
with the setup for the modem. Any advice?

Is your mail server hosted by the same ISP you're using to connect to the
Internet? Many ISPs now block an SMTP connection to any but their own mail
servers in a wrong-headed attempt to reduce spam. Perhaps AOL is not doing
this but your connection ISP is. You might try setting the outgoing server
for your account to an SMTP server provided by the ISP that you use for your
Internet connection.

Hi,

The email server with which I have problems is NOT hosted
by my ISP. In addition to my ISP, I use a different web-
site host, which also provides my email (because it
provides a desirable email address for my business). My
ISP provides an email server which works correctly with
my Outlook XP (but it does not have my company's name as
part of the email address).

My web-site host, not my ISP, provides the email services
with which I am having problems. When I use email
provided by my ISP, I have NO problems. Perhaps you have
found the solution. I will check with my ISP and find out.

Thanks.
Ed

Hi,

I believe this problem has been solved. My ISP is
blocking port 25 send ops from my computer to my SMTP
mail server, which is on another company's computer. My
ISP said that they were NOT causing the problem. However,
after I talked to them, the problem went away.

Sincere thanks for your effort.
