Can ping PCs but not connect

Eric

This is pretty strange. I have two PC hooked to a
Router. I can ping both computers just fine. However,
on one PC I can not connect even to itself under network
places. It says Mshome (my workgroup name)is not
accessible. "You might not have permission to use this
network resourse. Contact your administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. The
network path not found" Any ideas what may be causing
this? Could it be a policy setting that was somehow
applied to mine if I was hooked to another network?
Thanks,

Eric

They are both on the same subnet of 255.255.255.0

Are both PC on different subnet?
If so you need either WINS server or enable NETBIOS
forwarding on the router.

Useraccounts are on both computers. I use the same
username and password to login to both computers. Also
printsharing is loaded on both computers.

The router is the DHCP server at 192.168.2.1
Both computers are configured to obtain IP address and
DNS server automatically. One computer is 192.168.2.30
and the other is 192.168.2.31, both have subnet of
255.255.255.0,Default Gateway, DHCP Server, and DNS
Server are all 192.168.2.1. Both have Client for MS
Networks,Print Sharignt, and TCP/IP loaded. On the WINS
tab I have Enable LMHOSTS lookup checked and then Enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP selected. Under the DNS tab I have
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
selected and Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS
suffix checked, and Register the connection's addresses
in DNS checked. That is all I can think of at this
point. Let me know if there is anything. Thanks,

Eric

That's the subnet mask (24bit/Class C) but it doesn't mean that they're on
the same subnet. What are the IP address octets?

The router has limited the IP addresses to 192.168.2.2
thru 192.168.2.40. Both have 192.168.2 as the first 3
octets. I gave a complete breakdown of the configuration
under your last post.

Is there anything like a firewall running on those computers, or maybe
something like PC Cillin? Are they both W2k's?

XP comes with a Internet Connection Firewall. Make sure that it's not
enabled. It's under the network connection's Properties/Advanced.

Actually I have tried two routers with it and same
result. One is a Belkin and the other is SMC. Both have
no special configuration that I could see causing the
laptop not being able to even access the workgroup. Its
strange.
