can ping by IP, not by name

I've added a winxp laptop to an existing network of two Win98se
machines. The network is based on a Netgear router. All three machines
have internet access, and all machines can ping the others by IP
address. The two 98se machines are able to see each other, share files,
etc.

The xp machine is invisible to the two 98se machines, and cannot be
pinged by name, only by IP address. The two 98se machines are invisible
to the xp machine, and also cannot be pinged my name, only by IP
address. I've run the wizards and troubleshooter to no avail. Can
someone tell me what I am missing?

On the XP box. ensure NetBIOS-over-TCPIP is Enabled.
Network Connections folder, r-click LAN connection, properties.
Scroll down the list to TCP/IP, and select it.
Click Properties button.
In TCP/IP properties sheet, click Advanced button.
WINS tab, Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Then Start | Run |Winver.
Do you have original XP, or do you have SP1 or SP2?

If SP2, then so to the security centre in control panel and go into the
Windows Firewall, and enable the File and Print sharing exception.

If Original or SP1, then go to the LAN connection icon in the Network
Connections folder, r-click, properties. Disable the Internet Connection
Firewall on the LAN connection.
