Last week after installing Media Player 9 and DirectX 9,
Windows XP Home could not boot. My HD was not recognised
as a boot device. I replaced the HD and restored a recent
backup of my C drive (OP SYS) and the pc now boots as far
as the Windows XP logo and after 2 - 3 seconds starts a
reboot. Now I am offered the menu (Safe Mode etc.). If I
choose "Normal" the pc reboots. I can only open WindowsXP
if I choose "Last known good config". Then I am asked to
reboot because new hardware has been installed and the
software needs a reboot.
I have cleared the CMOS and no difference.
I have been able to download Windows Updates but there
remains four updates that dont seem to install when
downloaded (critical updates).
Before I tried to install Media Player my pc was fine. I
have not installed any hardware.
Can anybody help me I cannot think of anything I can do.

Thanks

I experienced thesame problems and the only way I could
overcome them was to do a CLEAN INSTALL of XP. My problems
appeared at the same time a couple of the "Blaster"
viruses found their way onto my hard drive.
