Hi,
The computer has Office 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional and
Norton Internet Security including NAV. Problem: For the past couple of
days my Outlook receives email as normal but none of my outgoing emails are
going. I receive error messages that state connection to my server was lost
and one of two operations failed.
I have tried: Accessing my email account using ISP's webmail interface and
removing all items from my inbox. Disabling Norton Anti-Virus from scanning
incoming and outgoing email. Ran Outlook Detect and Repair. And finally,
uninstalling and reinstalling Office Disc 1.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks, Bill

First, thank you for such a thorough post - nicely done. Saves people a lot
of time if they don't have to go back & forth with questions!

Can you try to telnet to your ISP's SMTP server in a command prompt to check
if you can see the 'banner'?

Thank you for your post and comments. The computer is actually my
daughter's. Her ISP is the university she attends and she lives at the
university, not with me.
A telnet to her ISP's SMTP does not return the banner. She uses software
(named PUTTY), supplied by her ISP, to log on to the net. She advises that
she installed a PUTTY upgrade about the same time her outgoing emails
stopped sending. I advised her to contact the ISP Help Desk. They
suggested she delete her account in her Outlook and recreate it. We had
already tried that with no success.

The ISP help desk tells her that PUTTY should not be a problem. It does
seem like a strange coincidence to me. She is continuing to discuss the
problem with the ISP but we would appreciate any other suggestions.

Thanks again for your help,

Bill

Hi,

Thank you for your post and comments. The computer is actually my
daughter's. Her ISP is the university she attends. She lives in a
university owned building. We don't know where the network cable goes when
it leaves her room. This is a new problem and she has been using the same
set up for 18 months.

The software used to log on to her ISP is new but the ISP doesn't think that
is the problem.

Thanks,

Bill
