Around 7/23/09 I started to have an issue with sending mail using microsoft
mail. I'm a comcast user, comcast can not resolve the issue. I recieve mail
just can not send. Around the same time I also upgraded to internet explyer 8
I thought this was the issue so I uninstalled. Still have issue. I also was
asked to re-instal McAfee threw comcast. I'm not sure if either of these
updates caused my issue. I backed out McAfee to see if that was the issue.
Still could not send. I reinstalled McAfee to make sure protected. Any
suggestions would be great.
I had also been getting a windows defender error - but used some suggestion
from other post and tht error is gone

Please copy and paste the complete error message that you get when you try
to send.

Crystal ball sez :)

You have the wrong SMTP port number, 25 instead of 587?
Check it out at Tools>accounts>select your account>properties>advanced tab.
All the settings described below for Outlook Express, are the same in
Windows Mail.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smpt.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I worked with comacst for two hours the other say and we changed port to 587
and this did not resolve the issue.
I have also removed the scanning of email messages on McAfee, removed email
account and re-set up emaill account. Comcast says this is a windows issue????

this is th error when chnage to 587

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Test',
Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smpt.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '550 5.1.0 Authentication required', Port: 587, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Go and change it back to 587.
Then delete any test messages that are in your Outbox, and try sending
again.
If it fails give me the error message again please.

Go to the Server tab of the accounts properties and "My server requires
authentication" must be checked.

Also - I have another pc that uses this mail service and having no issues.
FYI

In that case?
Try the "My server requires authentication" change, if that fails then I
suggest that your account may have become corrupt in some way, maybe by your
anti virus?
Remove the account>close and reopen WM>rebuild the account again from
scratch.
