Can not resolve LAN names, IE fails

I have a problem that even the "gold standard" support group at Dell could
not fix. Would you like to try to beat the best talent in Texas? Here's the
deal:

1. New Dell workstation running Win 2000 Pro just installed down here a few
days ago.
2. It is configured exactly like all the other Win 2000 machines in this
office but it can neither see anyone in the network nor can it gain access to
the internet through IE.
3. It can ping all the machines in the LAN, but only via IP address. It can
not resolve LAN names
4. It can ping any IP address out in the internet via either name or IP
address, but IE fails with either names or IP addresses
5. All the other machines in the LAN can ping this machine.
6. All the other machines in the LAN can "see" this machine in Windows
Explorer but can not navigate to its shared folders. (system 53 error)
7. "ipconfig /all" results in all the appropriate and correct information.
It can ping the DNS servers

8. "nbtstat -a [this machines ip address]" fails with host not found
9. We are running DHCP
10. Cbeyond is our ISP
11. Both Dell and I are completely stumped as to why it can not see the LAN
and why IE fails to get out into the internet

Some questions which may (or probably may not!) be worth considering:

Are all the network protocols, clients, adaptors set up *exactly* as the
other machines (ie not just TCP/IP)?
Have you checked to make sure that the proxy settings in IE are correct (or
the use proxy server option is unchecked)?
Have you tried changing the physycal network card and the cables?
Are there any other unused network (or network like eg Firewire) adaptors
enabled?

On a completely different subject from this thread, can anyone tell me why
if if reply to an existing post my message gets through, but when I tried to
post a new thread (yesterday) my message disappeared into the ether.

I'm using OE and have posted successfully to other non Microsoft groups.

One rthing sticks out a mile. Your DNS settings are on the Internet
and NOT on the LAN. This seems wrong. Are you sure that you want them
that way?

Is this an AD Domain? In which case the DNS should point to internal
DNS servers, normally.

Cheers,

Cliff
