I installed a wireless usb adaptor on a laptop. Had some
problems and now I can not log on to Windows. I am afraid
we will loose some documents that we need. Is there any
way to get past the password without reformatting the
computer?

After you've reset your password, consider these two issues:
- Why wing it with a single admin account? It's dangers are
patently obvious.
- How is your backup strategy? Storing important documents
on just one medium is asking for trouble.
