Can not hear Sound files in PowerPoint 2007

I inserted compatible sound file in powerpoint 2007 to be played when
clicked. I run the presentation, then I clicked on the sound icon, IT DOESN'T
PLAY at all.
I tried to play the sound file even without running the presentation;
still I hear nothing.
Would you please guide me of any special setting to be done to play the
sound file? Thanks.

What type of sound files are they? How are you trying to play them outside
of PowerPoint

The file types invlude:
WMV, AVI, MP3.
I inserted the file utilizing insert sound from file in Powerpoint 2007.
They do not play whether you select "play sound automatically" nor "when
clicked". Any suggestiones.
I appreciate your concern.

2 possibilities:
You're playing your PowerPoint without external sound files in other
computers;
The path of your sound file is too long to your presentation file relatively.

You can try to copy your sound files and re-insert them.
Is that okay?

Try placing the sound file in the same folder as the presentation and then
reinsert it. Make sure this folder is not buried too deep in the file
structure.

I would like to thank all of you regarding your concern specially Frank.
Converting the files solved the problem.
Also, what is the best format to run a video clip using powerpoint 2007. I
have WMV (movie made using Windows Movie Maker). Should I convert it to avi?
Thanks.
