I have a Win XP SP1 machine at home, and now I can not go to any website. I
connect using dial up modem or cable modem, and it says I am connected, but
when I go to IE and type in any website (www.microsoft.com, www.yahoo.com,
www.google.com), it keeps saying "Page can not be found", and at the top it
says "Could not find server". I used to be able to go to any website before.
I already uninstall McCafee firewall and disable the VirusScan on this
machine.

This problem seems to start happening after we installed Windows XP Hotfix
(SP2) Q815485. I tried to uninstall the Hotfix, but I could not find it in
the list of programs in Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.
Another information: we used to have XP Home edition, then we upgraded to XP
Professional. After that, we could not even start the Remote Access
Connection Manager, so we reinstall XP SP1, and that enable us to start the
Remote Access Connection Manager again.

How can I fix this problem ? Thank you so much.

THAT IS A VERY BAD THING TO DO IF YOU THEN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.

You've tried the standard battery of antivirus, hijacker and so on
utilities?
Also try: http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/WinsockFix.zip

If no joy:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815485
In theory, an original and successful install of Q815485 should not cause
the problem.

Are you even using wireless?

If you use one, have you tried bypassing the router?

Experiment: Can you ping from a cmd dosbox?
ping -n 1 66.94.234.13
ping -n 1 -a yahoo.com

If the 1st ping experiment works but the 2nd does not then your DNS is set
up wrong either on your computer or on your router, or both, and your ISP
should be able to help you resolve the issue.

If neither ping works then there may be many reasons. So then try a repair
install of XP-Pro and then the experiment again and then report back. Be
sure to have updated antivirus and firewall enabled after the repair install
and before your very first connection to the internet, else you might suffer
infection near immediately.

Thank you all.
I will install the WinSock Fix for XP.

Are you even using wireless?
That machine is using wireless to connect to another computer that is
connected directly to the router.

If you use one, have you tried bypassing the router?
I tried connecting to the internet using a dial up connection. It says I am
connected, but I can not browse on any website on IE. (I haven't tried using
other browsers).

Experiment: Can you ping from a cmd dosbox?
ping -n 1 66.94.234.13
ping -n 1 -a yahoo.com
I will try to do it tonight when I get home (the machine is at my home). I
did try "ping yahoo.com", and it says something like "failed connecting to
yahoo.com".
I don't think I try "ping -n 1 66.94.234.13" yet. I will try it tonight and
let you know tomorrow.

You said "If neither ping works then there may be many reasons. So then try

What is a repair install of XP-Pro ?

You said "Be sure to have updated antivirus and firewall enabled after the
repair install and before your very first connection to the internet."
Did you mean to make sure to enable the firewall and antivirus again after
the repair ?

Thank you so much for your help.

Why not connect both computers to the router instead of looping through
another computer to get to the router? The router is wireless? Did this
current setup ever work for you before, and were any changes made to the
other computer that is doing Internet Connection Sharing, and it works ok on
the internet? Can each of your computers "ping" each other? Use IPCONFIG
from a cmd dosbox (Start|Run|cmd then type IPCONFIG) to determine an ip
address assigned to a Windows 2000 or XP computer, and ping the other
computer from each. What are the assigned IP addresses of each at the same
point in time? Do any show a gateway IP address? What do they have for a
netmask entry? Are both computers joined to the same workgroup, and if so
then can they ever see each other in Network Places?

Boot to Windows, insert CD used to install XP (NOT a "restoration" CD!!!),
follow on screen directions to do a repair install or upgrade. Be very
carefull not to do a clean (full) install nor to install Windows to a
different folder. Keep in mind that all Microsoft updates will need to be
reinstalled after you do a repair or upgrade installation of XP.
You said "Be sure to have updated antivirus and firewall enabled after the

Yes, enable your antivirus and firewall software before connecting to any
network (including before connecting to your own LAN, if you have one).
Thank you so much for your help.

Are you showing any problems in Device Manager?

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry, I gave you the wrong information. 1 computer directly connect to the
router, and the other (the one that does not work) connect to the router via
wireless connection. So, none of the PCs connect to the other PC to get to
the router. We know the problem is not with the router, because we connected
this PC directly to the cable modem (bypassing the router), and it still
does not work.

The router is wireless?
Yes

Did this current setup ever work for you before, and were any changes made
to the other computer that is doing Internet Connection Sharing, and it
works ok on
the internet?
Yes, this setup work before.
We even connected this computer directly to the cable modem (bypassing the
router), and it still does not work, still cannot browse the internet.

Another information: we went to Control Panel - Network Connections, and
tried to "Repair the connection", and got an error something like "Fail.
Cannot renew IP connection".

Thank you.

Ok, I doubt that the bothersome computer is obtaining an IP address at all.
Tell me what IPCONFIG reports from a dosbox. Just copy and paste it to your
reply message (or into Notepad, then save and move it by floppy if
necessary).

Meanwhile, make sure IE is configured to "Automatically detect settings" (in
IE, click Tools then Internet Options then the Connections tab and then
click the LAN settings button, here is where you set that option). Also, and
for now, and on the Connections tab again, make sure the "Never dial a
connection" option is set (which means you'd have to manually click the
dialup connection icon and let the connection occur before launching IE).

And be sure to check in Device Manager and make sure there are no problems
being reported with the hardware. I'll try to get back on this tomorrow
after you've answered.

Thanks.
I will do the IPCONFIG on the bothersome PC and report it back here.

You said "And be sure to check in Device Manager and make sure there are no
problems being reported with the hardware"
Where can I check for the Device Manager ?

Thanks.

To access the Device Manager, click Start> right click My Computer>scroll to properties, click>select the Device Manager Tab. Yellow Exclamation marks indicate warnings or errors.
