Internet connection problems

I don't know if this is the right place to ask about this, but maybe someone
knows what to do. My husband and I have separate computers. For years we
have been connected, at the same time, to the internet via cable modem and a
router. Now we are unable to be connected at the same time. Sometimes it's
me and sometimes it's him, but never at the same time and we never know
who's going to be connected or when. We've called Comcast and they say the
modem is working properly and the problem is the router. The technician, who
was here for three hours and replaced the modem couldn't help. All the
lights on the router are blinking as they should (we've tried two different
routers and they SEEM to be working properly). We are both using Windows XP
and all was well until last weekend when we were at the Comcast office to
exchange our cable box. While we were there, the woman behind the counter
said we only needed one IP address and removed the second one she saw there.
Since then, we've each had connection, but never at the same time. I am at a
loss as to what to do. Should we buy a new router? Should I call Comcast
again and cry or scream? Can someone here give me some suggestions?

Thanks so much in advance for your time...

Sounds like the settings in your router are not correct. Contact the
manufacturer's technical support. All the major router makers offer
copious assistance in setting up your router.

If you have the user manual for your router, it may be worth studying.

After the first PC connects successfully,
then try the following on the PC that does not.

Open a command prompt window and enter these two commands in the following
order:
1) ipconfig /release
2) ipconfig /renew

o Make sure that your Modem wire is connected to the "WAN" or
"Internet" connection on your router.

o Make sure that your computers are connected to the LAN ports
(usually numbered).

o What you are seeing could also be attributed to using a "Switch"
or "Hub" instead of a "Router" (They look similar). Router
settings could also cause this condition.

o Make sure the router is configured for a "Gateway" mode.

o Holding down the reset button for about 10 seconds with power on
will reset most routers to a factory-default setting which should be
close to correct. Read your router manual for more detail.

o On your computer, bring up a command prompt and enter the command
"ipconfig /all". The IP address shown should start with 192.168.x.x
or 10.x.x.x for most routers.

The default settings for most routers is for Cable systems (as opposed to
DSL connections from a phone company). Locate the Reset button on your
router, and check the manual or manufacturer's website for how to use it.
On some routers, you press it for about 30 seconds. You may find that
removing its power connection for a couple of minutes is also helpful.

Once that's done, the router will either work, or it's failing. If you
want to try a new router, they are not expensive. I regularly see them for
around $50.

Your cable provider has nothing to do with this, so there's no point in
calling them and complaining on this; they aren't at fault.

I did as you suggested and the ip number was not renewed. Now I have NO ip
number. Getting a new router today. Someone suggested that we were using a
hub instead of a router...he may be right, that's what it says on the
equipment itself. However, the piece of equipment we were using when this
trouble started IS a router and it was no go with that, too.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Eventually this will be
resolved...I'm just impatient!

Thank you all for your help. All is working now. We bought a new router,
called their tech support to get help setting things up, and we are both up
and running better than ever. We bought a NetGear router and I must say that
the support agent was one of the best I've ever spoken to.

Again, thanks so much for taking the trouble to try to help me!
