can not access printers on XP machines

I have a client-server network with 5 computers all with static IPs
connected to an Intel 8 port network switch . All computers are fully
patched and can ping each other.

1 computer runs Windows 2003 server and is configured as the domain
controller.

2 compters run Windows XP , 2 computers run Windows 98 SE.

I can access the files and printers of the Server from all machines, but
can not print to the printers on the XP machines from any of the clients
except the computer that the printer is attached to. They do not appear in
the network neighborhood nor can I add the network printer to any of the
clients, except the other XP machine. It gives me an error message saying
that you are not authorized.

Shares on the 98 machines work perfect.

On the other XP machine I can add the network printer to the share and it
will print a test page. But when I reboot the computers the share goes away
and I'm not able to print again.

I disconnected our last Win98 machine about a year ago, so
I don't remember details, but are you sure the 98 machines
are logging onto the network completely, not just onto a
local account? Win98 has two different kinds of logon,
and one of them won't get you full network access (but
won't necessarily tell you there's a problem).

Thanks jjj but I'm pretty sure the win98 machines are logging in correctly
because they can see all the shares on the win2003 domain server.

This may be worth a try. On the server open Domain Controller Security Policy and go
to security settings/local policies/security options and find the two security
options for "digitally sign communications:(always) and set them to disabled and the
run gpupdate /force on the server. Also verify that your domain controller is
pointing ONLY to itself by it's assigned static IP address as it's preferred dns
server in tcp/ip properties as shown by ipconfig /all. If it is not then configure it
and run netdiag /fix on it and then restart the netlogon service. The XP Pro
computers [assuming they are PRO] and all XP Pro or Windows 2000 domain members must
point only to your domain controller as their preferred dns server. --- Steve

Thanks Steve, I got it to work. I did several things including installing a
new network card, installing the win98 driver on the XP machine, logged on
to the XP machine as domain admin and added each individual user to the
printer, as well as your suggestions.

This is a great newsgroup,

Thanks Again,

Jack
