Printer Sharing

Q

qas

I have a workgroup with printer and file sharing enabled. The HP printer
is attached to a W2K (SP4) machine.

On a W2K (SP4) client, clicking print in Word and choosing the network
printer locks up the machine or at best it takes many many minutes to
return. (This is after already having logged on and accessed a shared
folder).

On an XP (SP2) machine printing is sub-second.

I have re-"add"ed the network printer a number of times.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Check spooler settings on the client and be sure they're set to spool the
entire job before printing. Also check the settings on the printer host
(but they're probably set correctly now).

On the W2K client getting the printer properties dialog to open takes
many minutes. On the XP client it takes 1-2 seconds.

This leads me to believe I have a network issue. What can I do to
diagnose this?

thanks

I always start at one end or the other and check every bit of hardware all
the way to the other end. It could be a misconfigured or bad switch port,
bad patch cables at either end, bad cabling between the switch and PC, a
faulty or misconfigured NIC ...

File transfers to and from the shared folder on the machine acting as
print server are very fast. Just printer related activity is unusably
slow (many minutes)

Boy, you've got me on this one. If file transfers are fast and only printer
access is slow I'd be considering a printer driver problem - or I'd be
stumped. :-(

Using a static IP on the print server and "add"ing the printer by IP
address (rather than \\computername) seems to have sidestepped the problem.

Can't say I've ever heard of that particular solution before but I'm glad it
worked for you!
