Can not access folder on shared drive

S

speeder

I can not access one of my folders on a shared HD. Previously, I had
configured to share only that folder. I changed my mind, unshared it,
and shared the whole drive. I can access the other folders on that
drive but not the one I unshared.

Shouldn't the share extend to all subfolders of the drive? How can I
troubleshoot this to see what's wrong?

Setup: shared drive on an XP Pro desktop acessing from wireless
connection on XP Home laptop.

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand the problem.

What drive are you accessing -- the C: system drive, or another one?

What is the complete path, starting with the drive letter, to the
folder that you can't access?

What exactly happens when you try to access it. If there's an error
message, what does it say?

Is simple file sharing enabled or disabled on XP Pro?

The more details you give, the more likely it is that someone can
help.

What drive are you accessing -- the C: system drive, or another one?

What is the complete path, starting with the drive letter, to the
folder that you can't access?

D:\My Documents (this is not a partition), system drive is C:.
What exactly happens when you try to access it. If there's an error
message, what does it say?

Through "View Workgroup Computers", I browsed all the way to the "My
Documents" (which is visable) and upon double clicking it I get:

\\Proton\SATA2 (D)\My Documents is not acessible. You might not have
permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access denied.

On the "Proton" desktop, I can see with Computer Management that D:\
is listed in the Shared Folders / Shares. On Open Files I can see D:
is opened and being acessed by "TH" user. TH was the name of the
account created on my laptop, I changed it to something else even
though I still have a C:\Documents and Settings\th folder.

On both laptop and desktop the "Guest" account is deactivated.
Is simple file sharing enabled or disabled on XP Pro?

Simple file sharing is enabled.
The more details you give, the more likely it is that someone can
help.

When I share or unshare the "My Documents" folder, a window appears
briefly saying "Windows is configuring folder permissions" with a
small animation.

I am able to view and access other folders in the D: drive such as
D:\Mail for example.

Maybe this is unrelated but it definately points to something wrong
with my settings. The wireless laptop can not get an IP from the DHCP
server (router). I started troubleshooting this as well and noticed
that the node type on both comps are weird.

Browstat is messy also...

How do I correct this?

Maybe this is unrelated but it definately points to something wrong
with my settings. The wireless laptop can not get an IP from the DHCP
server (router).

Besides what I already posted I just noticed that when I try to repair
the connection (169.* address) I get the following event in the
Security tab of Event Viewer:

Source: Security
Category: Policy Change
Type: Failure Aud
Event ID: 615
User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
Computer: laptop

IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list
of network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security
hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get
the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run
IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

This is why I believe the DHCP failure is related to the access denied
problem of the shared folder.
