I'm thinking of buying a DVD writer.
Will I be able to do the following:

Insert DVD RW disk and copy files to it.
Remove it and use the drive to read/write other disk.
Reinsert the disk and write more files.
Read some of the files.
Reinsert the disk and write more files.
Repeat the above many times?

How about if I use a Writeable CD.
Can I do the above?

The drive I'm looking at comes with NERO 6.6

Thanks

I didn't see the answer to my question there.
I know they can be completely erased and rewritten but can I do what I asked
below?

Thanks

When I did the same thing, my documentation led me to think my DVD
writer was broken. I needed to set up Nero to use the drive instead
of assuming it was using my drive. Interesting enough, it looked
that it was working, but didn't do anything. I figured that out, but
haven't been able to get IN-CD to work so that I could just drag and
drop files.

You don't need Nero to use it as a writeable CD.

InCD reguires that the DVD _+RW and the CD-RW be formatted to
"packet-writing" system. XP native CD tools will treat CD-RWs as CD-Rs and
will not directly do DVD media.

BTW: If you have Nero 6 bundled with the DVD writer, you need to do the
updates for both Nero and InCD. InCD had problems with Service Pack 2 some
time ago.

I upgraded Nero, but don't know about InCD. I'd better check. I'll
look to see if this format command is something I can find.

You /should/ be able to do that with a DVD-RW drive and Nero. However, I
haven't been able to make it work with mine. I think the technology will
have to mature a little before it works hassle-free.

With Nero's InCD Installed.... Yes to all of the above. When it fills
up, just erase some files on it so you can add more. It acts just
like another small 4.x gig drive. You can drag and drop to & from it,
cut and paste to & from it, copy and past to & from it.
How about if I use a Writeable CD.
Can I do the above?

Insert CD-R disk and copy files to it. Yes
Remove it and use the drive to read/write other disk. Yes
Reinsert the disk and write more files.
Yes if you did a Multi Session write and didn't finalize.
Read some of the files. Yes
Repeat the above many times?
Yes until the disk fills up (Multi Session) or your finalize it.

However.... In multisession mode, when you add stuff later, what was
there before is made obsolete/unreadable even though it is still
taking up disk space.

Ed

Thanks for the answers

Turn off native CD writing in XP. Install Nero. Install INCD. Insert a
DVDRW media. This is not smart as DVDRW media is very limited to multi-use,
CDRW media has much more usage.

If nero 6.6 comes with packet writing then you'll be OK.

thanks

Assuming you have the latest version of INCD, INCD should be in the
lower-right system tray (default desktop not altered). Right click on its
icon, and be sure that its option is set for format to come up upon
insertion of blank media. After formatting with INCD, it will have a drive
letter that you can do all like a hard disk.

Correct. But the OP is talking about a DVD writer, so he may need to use a
DVD burning facility outside of INCD. Nero has many more options than just
ISO/Joliet format that XP only contains.

thanks
