Unable to write to a DVD+RW

Hi: I am able to use the SONY DRU-830A for all functions reading and writing
to standard DVD+ and DVD DL with no problems. I am unable to write to a
DVD+RW. Whenever I check the Properties of the disk drive, I am told it is
FULL. I have tried this on other drives with the same FULL report. It
appears it is OS dependent. BTW, it works AOK on my laptop with VISTA.

Any ideas??

Based on your statement, one would assume that the Sony optical drive is mounted
as an external unit (USB enclosure) and it functions normally when plugged into
a Vista system but falters when plugged into a Windows XP system. Is this what
you meant to say? If not, please clarify.

Otherwise, have you tried cleaning the laser heads (special head cleaner disc is
required)?

Or maybe erase the DVD-RW prior to use.

My bad.....My computer has two seperate DVD drives. I am able to read and
write CD, DVD+R, DVD+DL on either disk drive. No problems. However, when I
try to utilize any blank DVD+RW the disk reports as being full. When I place
the same DVD+RW into my laptop(VISTA) the disk reports as being completely
empty. (AS IT SHOULD).

Another strange quirk. When I check the disk drive with a blank DVD+RW
installed it reports as being a CD.

Hope this explains the problem.

You never mentioned what DVD writing software you're using, but to
write to a DVD-RW you need packet writing software such as Nero InCD.

Oops, also applies to DVD+RW.

I don't believe it's a Windows XP issue. I recently had similar problems with a
new pack of DVD+RW discs. Because it was the same brand that I previously used,
I was convinced it was a bad batch or they were no longer compatible with my
drive (Lite-on SOHW 1633S). The manufacturer (Verbatim) replaced them under
warranty. Still no joy.

Just on a whim, I went to Staples and bought their CD/DVD disc drive cleaner
(cost about $12 USD). It worked like a charm....no more problems with any media
now.

You only need packet wrting software if your trying to use it like a hard
drive folder.

Modern Burning software writes to DVD RW's with no problems.

Why ask HERE? XP has ZERO ability to do ANY writing to a DVD.

Ask in a group related to whatever DVD authoring program you use.

IOW........

Ask elsewhere

No you don't. Packet writing to a DVD-RW is a bad idea.
