"Windows encountered problem" write data to DVD

M

michaeljnc

I was was trying to copy a data folder, about 80MB, to a DVD+RW which I
thought would be a straight forward copy/paste operation with Explorer
or in My Computer. I have copied data to CD-R with this drive and also
copied DVD video with Nero Essentials 6 which came with the drive.

The error says:
'Windows encountered a problem copying this folder.'
'What do you want to do?'
retry skip cancel

Nero Express 'disk info' shows:
DVD+RW 4,483 MB
disk is empty
However, it says it will only write to CD-R/RW

The same data folder then copied to a CD-R without a hitch.
This is the first time I have tried to write data to a DVD.
What do I have to do to get this to work??
:-S
Thanks
Mike

XP doesn't natively do what you want as you have seen , Nero or other
burning programs will.

XP does not have the tools to write to DVD disks. To use a DVD as a giant
floppy disk you need 3rd party packet writing software installed. I'm not
familiar with Nero Express but I thought the packet writing component of
Nero was InCD.

Yes, I know InCD will do that, but I did not install that portion of the
software. I keep seeing posts elsewhere from people with some
experience, that InCD just gives lots of problems. I just read a short
thread at CDFreaks where some was advised to uninstall that.

Just downloaded DeepBurner ver. 1.8. I'll give it a try.
If you have any other suggestions, let me know.
Thanks,
Mike

Nero express should be able to burn DVD+RW but not with packet writing, just
like it would burn a DVD+R. The only way to use a DVD+RW as a giant floppy
is to install packet writing software.

Hi Rock. Thanks for your response. However, I am still confused and I
think I need to do some more research before proceeding further with
this through the news group. I did read some about packet writing and
UDF, but I am still lost as to how to proceed with DVD data writing and
what the differences are with disk formats, methods, restrictions,
caveats, quirks, etc.

I still like the old 1.44MB floppys for some things; small, easy to
handle (not so fragile), and pretty reliable, although slow and very
little capacity when compared to optical media.

Remember when a box of 10 360K floppys was at least $10.00?
Thanks,
Mike

Writing to CD is the same as writing to DVD except for the fact that XP
cannot write to DVDs. XP can write to CD-R and CD-RW but it treats them the
same (although RWs can be erased and reused). It doesn't treat the CD-RW as
a big floppy. To be able to write to an RW optical disk, whether it's CD or
DVD, as a giant floppy, it needs packet writing software. The largest
providers of this are Roxio (Drag to Disc) and Nero (InCD). There is other
packet writing software available.

3rd party programs such as Nero or Roxio can write to CD or DVD. Without
the packet writing component, they treat R and RW the same. Here is one
article on writing CDs in XP (although RWs can be erased and reused).

Well, first of all, thanks for the link! That will probably help a lot.
I have seen that WEB site before, but not that article. I should
explore the site further. It sounds like what you are referring to is
that With Out packet writing, the disk is closed after a write and
nothing can be added, the exception being that RW's can be erased and
then written to again. I understand now that DVD writing is not native
to XP. I guess that's why when the drive is empty, Explorer shows it as
DVD-RW, but after a DVD+RW was inserted, it changed to a CD drive; as if
that's all it knows.

Thanks for the help.
I'll read the article tomorrow.

Just as a matter of interest, I was looking at Backup4All yesterday,
which has its own disk writing capability, and also mentions some 3rd
party packet writing software.
The free edition, ver. 1.3.0, does not have that capability.
