Can I cross-reference lists of student names in EXCEL?

I need to cross reference lists of students from the previous year to this
year. Can I do that in EXCEL?
 
With VLOOKUP, but cross referencing is easier if students have an ID number
Need help with VLOOKUP?
 
I wasn't trying to be discourteous; it wasn't clear from the question how the
OP wanted the cross-referencing to be done.
